Item Electromagnetic Scattering of Two- Dimensional Electronic Systems(2019-01-01) Abbas H.T.; Aljihmani L.N.; Nevels R.D.; Qaraqe K.A.In this paper, we use the surface equivalence theorem and boundary conditions to develop a set of integral equations to study the electromagnetic (EM) scattering from thin material sheets. The proposed scheme is well-suited for EM investigation of two-dimensional (2D) materials that are increasingly becoming key components in the development of terahertz (THz) frequency devices. We also discuss the electronic properties of 2D materials that control the EM scattering, out of which existence of plasma waves at THz frequencies is most significant. Finally, the far-field scattering response for infinitesimally thin 2D materials is presented.Item On the existence of terahertz plasmons in two-dimensional semiconductor heterostructures(2019-09-01) Abbas H.T.; Aljihmani L.; Abbasi Q.H.; Qaraqe K.A.Plasmons existing along a semiconductor heterostructure found in a high electron mobility transistor are studied. With the help of the electronic properties of group III-V semiconductor materials, a multilayer structure is described using an equivalent transmission line network. The existence of surface waves is investigated using the transverse resonance method, and it is established that the complex conductivity of the two-dimensional electron gas with a negative imaginary part yields surface plasmons in the terahertz frequency domain.
