Item Botanical origin-based honey discrimination using Vis-Nir spectroscopy and statistical cluster analysis(2015-01-01) Tsankova D.; Lekova S.The aim of the article is to present results on the potential of honey discrimination (on the base of its botanical origins) by Vis-NIR spectroscopy and subsequent statistical cluster analysis. Thirty-five samples from three types of honey (acacia, linden, and honeydew) are measured by a spectrophotometer ``Cary100`` with recorded wavelength range of 350-900 nm for calibration of honey classifier. Firstly, principal components analysis (PCA) is used for reducing the number of inputs (wavelengths) and proper visualization of the experimental results. Next, the first two principal components (PCs) are combined separately with Naïve Bayes classification (NBC) and k-means clustering (KMC) to develop PC-NBC and PCKMC models. An additional reduction of the number of used wavelengths by selecting the values at equal, predetermined intervals by a power of 2 is proposed. The PC-NBC and PC-KMC models developed for these reduced wavelengths produce almost the same performance as compared with those developed for the original number of wavelengths and thus facilitate developing a simpler and cheaper sensor for honey discrimination in practice. The high accuracy of the proposed honey classifiers is confirmed by leave-one-out cross-validation test conducted in MATLAB environment.Item DETERMINATION OF BOTANICAL ORIGIN OF HONEY BY MID INFRARED SPECTROSCOPY (Mid-FTIR), COLORIMETRY AND CHEMOMETRIC ANALYSIS(2017-01-01) Lekova S.; Tsankova D.The aim the investigation reported is to determine the potential of determining the botanical origin of honey by a combination of middle infrared spectroscopy, colorimetry and chemometric analysis. Forty-three samples from three types of honey (acacia, linden, and honeydew) are subjected to Fourier transform mid-infrared (Mid-FTIR) spectroscopy. Transmittance spectra with wave numbers from 600 cm-1 to 4000 cm-1 are recorded. The latter are combined with some colorimetric parameters (CIELab) for training data of a linear discriminant analysis (LDA) based calibration model. Principal components analysis (PCA) is used to reduce the number of inputs (wave numbers and colour parameters) and get a proper visualization of the experimental results. The high accuracy of the proposed honey classifier is confirmed by a leave-one-out-cross validation test carried out in MATLAB environment.Item Using differential scanning calorimetry, laser refractometry, electrical conductivity and spectrophotometry for discrimination of different types of Bulgarian honey(2017-02-22) Vlaeva I.; Nikolova K.; Bodurov I.; Marudova M.; Tsankova D.; Lekova S.; Viraneva A.; Yovcheva T.The potential of several physical methods for investigation of the botanical origin of honey has been discussed. Samples from the three most prevalent types of honey in Bulgaria (acacia, linden and honeydew) have been used. They have been examined by laser refractometry, UV, VIS and FTIR spectroscopy, electric conductivity measurement and differential scanning calorimetry. The purpose of this study was to reveal the physical characterizations of honeys from different flora produced in Bulgaria and to identify honeys with a high apitherapy potential for future studies.
