The favorable properties of ionic liquids (ILs) make this class of chemical substances particularly interesting to study as potential replacement for traditional volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the field of solvent extraction and separation of metal ions during last two decades. Recent surge in the number of publications clearly indicates an unabated interest of scientific and engineering community toward these exciting and unique diluents. They have left their footprints in large number of solvent extraction systems involving almost all metals in the periodic table from Li(I) to Pu(IV) via d-elements and rare earth ions with tremendous efficiencies. The chemical nature of the metal cations always plays an important role in solvent extraction processes, and that is why a fly over the periodic table is scheduled. The merits and drawbacks of mixed extraction systems consisting of IL and molecular ligands will be reviewed and compared with conventional molecular systems, in terms of separation behavior, and reaction mechanism in this new ionic media. All overwhelmed findings in the field of solvent extraction chemistry until now, May 2020, will be assesed herein, with the goal to discover a cutting-edge way for metal recovery forward along with ionic liquids.
